How is Coaching Different from Therapy?

 Meet Trauma Recovery Coaching…

I get this question a lot. How is coaching different from therapy? Therapy is often needed when people are struggling at a level that needs critical care and intervention.

As a coach, I do not provide intervention. I do not write treatment plans or make decisions in the interest of my clients. While therapists often are needed to bring clients into stabilization, this often involves direct intervention and decision making that is not all in the clients’ hands. This is sometimes necessary in order to stabilize for safety.

However, most trauma survivors reach a point of stabilization where they are healing and growing organically, and rather than needing someone to direct their care, or provide “treatment,” they may find themselves in need of an attuned connection with someone who knows and understands innately the impact of trauma because they have a personal, lived experience.

Other survivors may not yet feel comfortable entering therapy. Or they may be taking a break from therapy, or need help exploring therapeutic options.

Enter a trauma recovery coach.

As a trauma survivor first and foremost, and then as a trained coach and trauma recovery expert, I am able to connect with my clients in a more peer-oriented way. I know inside my own skin and nervous system what it is like to live with complex PTSD.

I also know that you are the only expert on you. You are already whole. There is nothing wrong or broken that needs to be fixed or treated. You simply need a compassionate ally who has been this way before to walk with you as you discover what works for you and the healing and wholeness that is already within you as you move forward on your path to healing.

I am here to provide a safe, non-judgmental space where you can explore your possibilities for further healing. Since I’ve made it my life mission to understand trauma and its effects, I’m here to offer different maps for you to choose from, and to walk alongside you as you continue bravely forward. You are walking a hero’s journey, but you do not have to walk it alone.

I’m here to be a witness. An ally. Maybe a mentor. But never an authority.

In this format, We walk together, and I am here to support the path you choose.

 A Trauma Recovery Coach….

  • Is a guide, teacher and mentor who comes alongside their client as a peer

  • Builds a healthy relationship with their clients so their clients can learn how to build healthy relationships with themselves and others

  • Sets recovery goals together with their client, allowing the client to lead in mapping out a path that brings them closer to living the life they desire to live

  • Provides education about trauma and recovery

  • Shares their personal experiences to let clients know they aren’t alone in what they experience, and to provide validation

  • Helps their clients identify the lies their abuse taught them and where those lies are showing up in their lives today and helps them identify new, healthy beliefs

  • Helps their clients build a healthy, compassionate view of themselves, others and the world

  • Focuses on a client’s present lived experience with a lens on how past trauma informs the present

A Trauma Recovery Coach Does Not…

  • Treat, diagnose or assess a client’s mental health

  • Prescribe or give any advice about medication

  • Prescribe treatment

  • “Process” trauma with their clients

  • Work with clients who are at risk of harming themselves or others unless under the care of a therapist or licensed mental health practitioner

  • Work outside their window of competence and training
